CURRICULUM

Curriculum at Geelong East Primary School is diverse and challenging.  Based on individual student assessments, collaborative planning by teachers ensures teaching and learning at the children's point of need according to their social, emotional and intellectual development.  We encourage and support our students to strive for their personal best in all areas of the curriculum. Using the National Curriculum  as its framework, the curriculum is planned to support student learning in the 21st Century.

Geelong East Primary School has a strong focus on English and Mathematics.Inquiry Units integrate special spelling and reading programs, including Reading Recovery, support the development of literacy skills.

Information Communications Technology supports all curriculum areas with literacy and numeracy at their core.   Geelong East Primary School has committed to a 1:1 netbook program to provide all students in Years 3-6 with a netbook and iPads in every classroom to support student engagement and motivation.  In addition every classroom is equipped with an electronic, interactive whiteboard that puts the world of education at the fingertips of the teachers and students and utilises immediately relevant knowledge and programs to support children's learning.

The Arts program caters for the artistic and musical talents of  students through weekly special lessons, performances, shows, exhibitions both within the school and the community. Annual performances at GPAC and at school assemblies are highlights for both students and parents. An outdoor stage allows for impromptu performances and plays.

Physical Education and sporting activities are integral to the school program. Currently the school is applying for accreditation as a Health Promoting School.  Physical and Health education is an integral aspect of each child's school day.  A specialist teacher provides weekly lessons to children fro Prep to Year 6.  Sporting events such as athletics carnivals, cross country and clinics as well as entry into district, regional and state events ensure all children have the opportunity to participate to a high level.

Geelong East Primary School supports students with special learning needs through intervention and extension programs.  Individual learning improvement plans, program support group meetings and specialised individual programs ensure goals are set and met within our mainstream school. Community support agencies are utilised to support students with additional needs including speech therapy, mentors and family support specialists.

Additional programs provide leadership opportunities in the form of School and sporting captains, Junior School Council, Peer Mediators,  Environment Club, Debating and Chess clubs.  Or leadership program ensures our student leaders have the skills to contribute and lead our student body.

Geelong East Primary School is a vital learning hub.  Student’s needs are at the centre of all planning and decision making. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment that fosters and develops each child's confidence, self discipline and persistence  in an academic and social context.
